Single-Game Elo Rating Calculator
How to use this calculator
The Single-Game Elo Rating Calculator provides the fastest way to check exactly how many rating points you gained or lost after a chess match. By comparing your starting rating against your opponent’s rating, the Elo system generates a statistical expected score. Enter those ratings, select your result, and choose your assigned K-factor. The calculator will immediately output your rating delta and project your new official standing.
Breaking Down the Calculator Results
- Expected Score: The statistical probability of you winning the game before the first move was played. A 0.50 score means an exactly even match.
- Rating Delta: The exact number of points added to or subtracted from your current rating based on the game's outcome.
- Projected Rating: Your new rating immediately after the match is processed.
How Opponent Strength Impacts Rating Change
Under the Elo framework, not all wins are created equal. A victory over an underdog yields a very small rating increase because the system already expected you to win. If you want to test the idea with real inputs, try the Explore K-factor rules.
However, scoring an upset win against a grandmaster or titled player generates a massive rating surge. Even a draw is highly impactful: drawing against a stronger player awards you rating points, while drawing against a drastically weaker player actively drains your rating. If you want to test the idea with real inputs, try the Two-Player Elo Rating Calculator.
